What is Sabar? Sabar dance is a traditional Senegalese dance style, particularly associated with the Wolof people, that is characterized by energetic movements and drumming. It's a social dance often performed at celebrations and gatherings, with dancers moving to the rhythm of the sabar drum.
Who is Pape Moussa Sonko? Pape Moussa Sonko is the Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Senegal. Coming from a large family of artists, Pape Moussa is today recognized as one of the best Senegalese dancers and choreographers. He is currently Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Senegal, as well as Choreographer and founding member of the private dance company WAATO SIITA. Pape Moussa built his notoriety as principal dancer with acclaimed singer Youssou Ndour and the Super Etoile Band, touring internationally for many years, and performing on some of the world’s biggest stages including Carnegie Hall and Bercy Accor Arena in Paris. As a choreographer, Pape Moussa creates innovative choreographies spanning from traditional to modern. His work contributes to the artistic and cultural heritage fields, and he continues to educate in universities and forums around the world.
Why is this important? New Orleans and Senegal share a deep and intertwined history stemming from the Atlantic slave trade, where many enslaved Africans from Senegambia, including the region of Goree Island, were transported to the New World, including New Orleans.
